INGREDIENTS

  • 2-3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional: 1-2 teaspoons of sugar for enhanced sweetness

Note: Microwaves vary in power, so you may need to adjust the cooking time based on your appliance. Always handle the DoubleWave Fry Pan with care when removing it from the microwave, as it can get very hot. Caramelized onions are a delicious addition to sandwiches, salads, pizzas, omelets, and more! Remember, microwave cooking can sometimes produce uneven results, so it's essential to keep an eye on your onions and stir them periodically to prevent burning and to ensure even caramelization.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preparation: Peel and thinly slice the onions. If you want a sweeter caramelized onion, you can optionally add a little sugar.
  2. Preheat the Pan: Place the DoubleWave Fry Pan into the microwave and heat for 2 minutes on high without anything in it. This will get the pan hot and ready for the onions.
  3. Add Butter/Olive Oil: After preheating, carefully remove the pan from the microwave using oven mitts or a thick cloth to avoid burns. Add the butter or olive oil to the pan and swirl it around to ensure the base is fully coated.
  4. Add the Onions: Spread the thinly sliced onions evenly in the pan. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt (and sugar if using).
  5. Microwave: Put the pan back into the microwave. Cook on high for 4-6 minutes.
  6. Stir and Check: After 4-6 minutes, remove the pan and give the onions a good stir. At this point, they should start turning translucent and slightly golden.
  7. Continue Microwaving: Return the pan to the microwave and continue cooking in 2-3 minute intervals, stirring after each interval, until the onions are caramelized to your desired level. Depending on your microwave and the amount of onions, this can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes total.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Once caramelized to your liking, remove the onions from the pan and use them in your desired dish or store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
